Why my newborn photography studio matters more than you might think

When you book a newborn photography session, the studio you walk into matters.

It isn’t just a backdrop.

It isn’t simply a room where I put a camera and take photos.

And for me, it has never been an afterthought.

My newborn & family studio, which is in Armstrong Creek, Geelong has been intentionally created to be a calm, warm and welcoming space for babies and their families.

I’ve put an enormous amount of thought, time and love into creating it because I believe that the experience you have matters just as much as the photographs you take home.

It’s more than just a room in my house, it's bigger than that.

I often hear people refer to photographers who work from home as having a “little room set up” in their house.

And I completely understand why people might imagine that when they hear home studio.

But that’s not what Lou-Lou Pictures is.

My studio is a dedicated photography space designed specifically around newborns, maternity and families.

It’s not a spare bedroom with a backdrop pulled down when someone arrives.

It has been intentionally designed to give you room to breathe, relax and enjoy your session.

Because when you’ve just had a baby, the last thing I want is for you to feel like you’ve walked into someone’s makeshift workspace.

I want you to feel like you’ve entered a space created especially for you.

A calm space for new parents

Bringing a newborn to a photo session can feel a little daunting.

Especially if you’re a first-time parent.

Your baby might be hungry.

They might need a cuddle.

They might need a nappy change.

They might cry.

They might decide they don’t want to sleep at all.

And that’s completely okay (and normal)

There is no expectation that your baby needs to perform for me.

My studio is designed around the reality of newborn life.

It’s warm, comfortable and calm, giving us the time and space we need to follow your baby’s cues rather than rushing through a session.

Baby comes first. Always.

Safety is at the heart of my studio

When you’re trusting someone with your newborn, you should feel completely comfortable asking questions about safety.

I take that responsibility incredibly seriously.

Everything about a newborn session needs to be approached with care, from how your baby is handled and posed to the temperature of the room and the cleanliness of the studio.

My studio is maintained with newborn sessions specifically in mind.

I carefully consider the fabrics, props and surfaces that come into contact with your baby, and everything is cleaned and prepared between sessions.

There is no rushing.

There is no “just get the shot.”

If your baby needs to stop, we stop.

If your baby needs a feed, we feed.

If your baby needs Mum or Dad, they get Mum or Dad.

Your baby’s comfort and safety will always come before the photo.

I’ve thought about you, too

One of the things I love most about my studio is that it isn’t designed only for the baby.

It’s designed for the whole family.

Because Mum has just given birth.

Both parents are running on very little sleep.

Your toddler might be tired, overwhelmed or simply not interested in being photographed.

You might need to sit down for a moment.

You might need a drink.

You might need a snack.

You might just need a minute to breathe.

I’ve thought about those things.

I want you to feel welcomed

I want you to be able to settle in and know that I’ve got this.

The details matter

I’ve always believed that the little things make a big difference.

That’s why I spend so much time thinking about the atmosphere of my studio.

The textures.

The neutral tones.

The soft, timeless styling.

The comfort of the space.

The little touches available to parents.

Even the way the studio is arranged.

None of these things happen by accident.

They’re all part of creating an experience that feels warm, peaceful and considered.

Because when you walk into my studio, I want you to immediately feel:

“Okay. I can relax here.”

Your photos should reflect the experience

I don’t want your newborn photographs to feel clinical or overly staged.

I want them to feel soulful.

Timeless.

Soft.

Emotional.

You.

I want you to see your baby’s tiny features and remember what it felt like to hold them at that age.

I want photographs of your family together that feel genuine rather than forced.

And I want the environment around you to support that.

A beautiful studio doesn’t replace beautiful photography.

But a thoughtfully designed studio can help create the feeling behind the photographs.

When everyone is comfortable, relaxed and cared for, we can concentrate on what really matters:

your connection with one another.

Choosing a newborn photographer is about more than their portfolio

When you’re searching for a Geelong newborn photographer, it’s natural to look at photos and prices first.

And you absolutely should.

You want to love your photographer’s style.

And you want it to be in your budget.

But I’d encourage you to look beyond Instagram, too.

Ask about their studio.

Ask about their newborn safety practices.

Ask what happens if your baby won’t settle.

Ask whether you can take your time.

Ask what the experience will actually feel like.

Because you’re not simply booking someone to take photographs.

You’re inviting someone into an incredibly important and vulnerable chapter of your life.

You deserve to feel comfortable with that person.

Why I take so much pride in my studio

I’ve been photographing families for many years, and creating a beautiful studio wasn’t about having somewhere pretty to take photographs.

It was about creating somewhere people could feel safe.

Somewhere new parents could walk through the door and exhale.

Somewhere babies could be cared for gently.

Somewhere siblings could be themselves.

Somewhere Mum and Dad didn’t have to worry about whether their baby was crying or whether they were doing everything “right.”

Somewhere I could create the kind of photographs I believe in.

Photographs that tell your story.

My studio is a reflection of how I approach my business, with patience, care, intention and a whole lot of heart.

A studio created for your family’s story

So yes, I take enormous pride in my studio.

Because it isn’t just a studio.

It is part of the Lou-Lou Pictures experience.

It is where tiny newborns are cuddled, fed and photographed.

Where parents can slow down for a few hours.

Where first family photographs are created.

And where some of the most fleeting moments of your life are turned into something you can keep forever.

If you’re looking for a newborn photographer in Geelong or Armstrong Creek, I’d love to welcome you into my little corner of the world.

Come in, take a breath, and let me take care of the rest.
